SolarDay 2010 in North America

Since its creation last year, SolarDay has grown from one event in San Francisco, California in 2009 to nearly fifty events across North America in 2010. In addition to highlighting aspects of ‘green’ living and climate change, cities and organizations are planning events for SolarDay that focus on educating residents about renewable energy programs, rebates and incentives available at the city, state and federal level.

There is a listing of all events at: www.solarday.com/events.

The SolarDay Mission Statement

1 – To create a national and international day of awareness and celebration of SolarDay, including:

A – The many benefits of solar energy and energy independence,

B – The creation of more sustainable lifestyles and businesses,

C – The adoption of green and clean-technology that does not adversely affect the planet and the atmosphere,

D – Through SolarDay activities in the U.S. and worldwide experienced by hundreds of millions of people and governments with the objectives of 40 nations participating by 2014.

E – Gain official recognition of SolarDay by the U.S. government and other governments as an annual day of recognition of solar energy and the goal of energy independence as a fundamental part of citizen and business sustainability objectives for the country.

F – Improve the lives of people who have no access to electricity.

Why Solar? Why Now?

Our energy costs continue to increase each year.

Addison Huegel, San Francisco-based Executive Director of SolarDay 2010 said: “More and more people are adopting greener lifestyles. Solar is a major component to green lifestyles and it’s an excellent way to save money on monthly electricity bills. You see green in the cars we drive, the consumer products we buy, the everyday things we do – from recycling to building greener homes and commercial buildings – and the intensive interest in lowering our energy costs and energy conservation.

“Government support on the state and Federal level has been crucial. In some states the Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) and state rebates reduce the cost of a solar installation by nearly half. Just one of the innovative new funding programs allow home and business owners to pay for their solar installation through their property taxes. And then there’s the PPA’s – power purchase agreements where the property owner pays nothing for the solar installation, instead buying the electricity produced by the installation at a fixed rate over the years – and sometimes the cost of the solar installation can be paid through property taxes. There’s a lot of ways to economically finance solar these days . . .

“SolarDay and SunPower dealers are providing helpful information to the public about solar energy, saving money and getting control over their energy costs for now and the future.”

US House of Representatives Recognizes SolarDay

US House Representative Doris Matsui, representing the 5th district in California, has officially expressed her support for SolarDay 2010:
Dear SolarDay 2010,

I am writing to express my support for SolarDay 2010. Celebrations such as SolarDay represent the ever growing need for clean and sustainable energy that reduces America's dependance on foreign oil.
The second annual SolarDay will spread awareness and education about the incredible capabilities of solar power. Harvesting the sun's energy can create jobs and make our nation energy independent. The Solar Energy Industries Association in fact predicts that over 60,000 jobs will be created in the solar industry by the end of this year. This is truly remarkable.

With dozens of events being held throughout the country on June 19th, members of the public will have the opportunity to understand how solar power can assist in leading and more sustainable lifestyles.

Thank you for your continued wok in moving our country away from fossil fuels and toward a sustainable future.

Sincerely,

Doris O. Matsui
Member of Congress

History

Last year’s SolarDay 2009 included a solar thermal tour hosted by the City of San Francisco and media coverage of this day in recognition of the role of solar in California and the U.S.
